How OANDA crypto CFDs work

Crypto CFDs differ from spot crypto in ownership, margin, trading direction and carrying costs. Exact charges and contract terms depend on the OANDA account and instrument.

Contracts for difference

You trade the difference between the opening and closing price rather than acquiring the underlying cryptocurrency or settling on-chain.

Long and short

You can open long or short positions. Either direction can produce a loss if the market moves against the position.

Up to 2:1 leverage

OANDA Asia Pacific currently lists 2:1 maximum leverage for retail clients on Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Ether and Litecoin CFDs, equivalent to a 50% margin requirement.

Spreads, commission and financing

Trading costs can include the spread, applicable commission and financing on positions held across the financing cut-off. The pricing model depends on the account and product.

24/5 trading

OANDA Asia Pacific crypto CFDs currently trade from Sunday to Friday on a 24/5 schedule, with a short daily market break rather than continuous weekend trading.

Stops and margin

Standard stop-loss orders are available, but crypto CFDs do not support GSLOs and a standard stop loss does not reduce the margin requirement for these instruments.

What can move cryptocurrency prices

Crypto CFD prices follow changes in the underlying cryptocurrency market. Liquidity, regulation, macro conditions, market structure and network events can all change price and spreads quickly.

  • Macro rates, US-dollar liquidity and risk appetite can affect crypto valuations
  • Regulation, ETF flows and large market participants can change supply and demand
  • High derivatives leverage and forced liquidations can amplify short-term moves

Bitcoin halving

Bitcoin halving changes the pace of new supply, but it does not by itself determine the direction of Bitcoin's market price.

Regulation

Changes to trading, stablecoin, securities and tax rules in major jurisdictions can affect expectations, access and liquidity.

ETFs and institutions

Subscriptions, redemptions and institutional positioning in spot crypto products can affect marginal demand for underlying assets.

Rates and USD liquidity

Interest rates, US-dollar liquidity and broad risk appetite can change the funding environment for cryptocurrency markets.

Network and technology events

Protocol upgrades, security events, congestion and changes in network activity can influence sentiment around individual cryptocurrencies.

Leverage and sentiment

When derivatives leverage is concentrated, rapid price changes can trigger forced liquidations that further increase short-term volatility.

Margin, stop losses and volatility risk

Crypto CFDs combine leverage with a highly volatile underlying market. Standard stop orders can slip, and prices may gap when OANDA's crypto CFD market reopens after the weekend.

Position size and margin

OANDA Asia Pacific currently sets a 2:1 retail maximum leverage for crypto CFDs. Larger positions therefore use more margin and create larger changes in account equity for the same price move.

Standard stop-loss orders

Crypto CFDs support standard stop-loss orders but not GSLOs. A standard stop can fill at the next available price if the market moves through the requested level.

24/5 market and reopening gaps

OANDA crypto CFDs are not open 24/7. The underlying crypto market can continue moving while OANDA is closed, so reopening prices may differ materially from the prior close.

Risk warning

Cryptocurrency CFDs are high-risk leveraged products. Leverage magnifies both gains and losses, while gaps, wider spreads and margin pressure can cause losses to increase quickly. Conditions vary by OANDA entity and account.

OANDA crypto CFD account and trading environment

Available instruments, platforms, margin and order features are determined by the OANDA entity and sub-account that serves you.
